Like Patty, I wasn’t going to open my shop for the public, but I needed to be inside my little sanctuary to parse through the new revelations and what the possibilities might lead to. I’d keep the lights off, stoke the fire in the mystery room, and curl up on the antique sofa to think. For the first time in a long time, there’d be no cacophony of noises from the construction crew above our heads or Ebony losing her temper.

Things were making sense and becoming clearer.

An affair. That had to play a part. But I needed to figure out how before I made my next move. Did it play a factor in Cecil’s promotion and his death? One or the other? Or in some other way I couldn’t see yet?

No sooner had we stepped inside the Cozy Corgi—Watson trotting happily off to his ray of sunshine in the new-release section to nap—than my cell rang.

I groaned, resenting the intrusion. I sensed the larger pieces of the puzzle swirling around me, wanting desperately to click together and reveal the picture—or at least a large portion of that picture. A bit of that faded as I saw Katie’s name displayed on the screen.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.” I made my tone bright. “Definitely not keeping baker hours right now, are you?”

“Hardly.” Even the snort Katie issued sounded tired. “Arvin and Lavender were here until nearly midnight, then I was so… caught up in memories and such that I started baking.”

Caught up in memories. I wondered if the things keeping her up at night were the moments with her parents when they returned to relieve the babysitter, after being out on a “date night”—of the nightmare variety—or of her early days with her grandmother, being raised by a woman she’d never met until her parents were taken away.

Katie interrupted my pondering. “I’m heading out to see Pastor Davis. But I wanted to check in with you before I did, see if there’s any news or if I need to push my meeting with him back so I can be with you to question someone else.”

“Pastor Davis?” I hesitated. Katie and Stuart Davis were friends of sorts, both lovers of baked goods, but Katie was hardly religious. Maybe some of the memories stirred the night before were changing that?

“I woke up to a message from him. It seems he was paid a visit by Arvin yesterday, before he came to interview me.” Once again, she clarified before I could find the right words. “Pastor Davis called this morning while I was still sleeping. Apparently, something about how the interview went bugged him all night, so he wants to talk.”

“That is interesting. Arvin’s been busy.” More puzzle pieces begin to swirl, but it didn’t seem to go with the picture that was forming. “I walked in on him wrapping up with Ebony and Beulah a little bit ago.”

“Ebony and…” The surprise made Katie sound alert, but her tone turned cautious. “Well… we knew he was going to talk to people around town.
